Microencapsulated zinc oxide
Shield-Zn is a unique, microencapsulated form of zinc oxide (ZnO) for the treatment and control of post-weaning scours in piglets.
Due to the unique formulation of Shield-Zn, it is highly effective in releasing Zn++ ions in the GI tract to actively compete for binding sites with pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli. At the same time, Shield-Zn keeps the pH of the GI tract low which also reduces the ability of E. coli to colonise and promote populations of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidofilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum.
Trials with Shield-Zn have shown reduced post-weaning scours and improved GI tract conditions compared to traditional ZnO treatments and antibiotics.
Shield-Zn also dramatically reduces zinc levels in the faeces due to the ability to use significantly lower ZnO levels, related to the much higher efficiency of control seen with Shield-Zn.
Shield-Zn can be included in feeds at a rate of 1 kg per MT of feed to achieve superior results over traditional ZnO products at 3 kg per MT of feed. This is a 30-fold reduction in the actual ZnO inclusion level in the feed, which dramatically reduced Zn levels in the faeces, a significant improvement for the environment.
